Shipping perfume: air or sea, and the dangerous goods rules

Perfume with alcohol is a flammable liquid, UN1266, class 3. By air it needs dangerous goods packing and a declaration, and many airlines and parcel services refuse it. Glass perfume is also dense, so air freight costs far more than for most goods. Most orders go by sea, with a small first batch by air when the launch date is tight.

Why air is so expensive for perfume

Sea freight for small shipments is charged by volume. Air freight is charged by weight, or by volume weight if the goods are light and bulky. Glass perfume is the worst case for air: a boxed 50ml bottle weighs close to 300 grams, and a packed shipment is very dense. Ten thousand boxed 50ml bottles weigh close to three tonnes.

Density helps at sea, because the goods take little space. It hurts in the air, because the bill follows the kilograms. For packed glass perfume, air can cost fifteen to twenty times as much as sea.

Dangerous goods on top

Alcohol perfume ships as UN1266, class 3 flammable liquid. By air it needs certified packing, labels and a dangerous goods declaration, and not every airline takes it. In peak season, dangerous goods are the first cargo to be left off a full flight, so paying for air does not always mean arriving on time.

Splitting a launch

When a launch date is tight, the useful answer is rarely “all by air”. Work back from the shelf date:

  1. Send a few hundred units by air to fill the first stores or the first online orders.
  2. Send the bulk by sea.
  3. Plan the next order so that sea freight covers it.

The air part then costs a fraction of air freighting the whole order.

What can hold goods at the border

  • Labels. Product made in China must say Made in China on the product label. A label naming another country can lead to inspection, fines and delay.
  • Documents. Missing safety data sheets or ingredient lists slow clearance. See import documents.
  • Destination tests. Some ports test perfume, for example for volatile organic compounds. A failed test can hold goods for weeks, so check your market’s rules before the first shipment.

Packing for the journey

Bottles travel in fitted inserts inside the retail box, then in inner and outer cartons. Before bulk, the packed product goes through transit and drop tests at the sample stage. Some finishes, such as frosting with hot foil, scratch in transit, and the test is where that shows up.

An alcohol-free alternative

If you sell online or need to ship by air regularly, consider an alcohol-free product. It is not a flammable liquid. See alcohol-free perfume explained.

Questions buyers ask

How much more does air freight cost for perfume?

For dense goods such as glass perfume, air freight can run at fifteen to twenty times the sea rate per unit. Ask for both quotes on your real carton size.

Can perfume go into Amazon FBA or parcel services?

Alcohol perfume is restricted or needs special handling in most parcel and marketplace channels. Alcohol-free products avoid most of these limits.
